More about the cannabis terpene Myrcene
Myrcene is one of the primary terpenes in cannabis and occurs readily in many strains. In fact, it is considered to be the most abundant of all the terpenes. Most describe Myrcene as an ‘earthy’ smell and it is the terpene most often credited as the smell most associated with the marijuana you are familiar with, even if it is the aroma wafting from the car next to you at the stoplight and you’ve never been any closer to it, you know that smell.
The taste of Myrcene has hints of red grape, spice, and balsamic. Flavonoids work hand in hand with terpenes. Some people feel this gives the Myrcene a hint of cloves smell also.
Myrcene definitely works best with an entourage effect of the cannabinoids and other terpenes present in cannabis and it is, itself, responsible for roughly 50% of the total amount of terpenes in any one batch of marijuana. It is the most present in all strains.
The entourage effect simply means that Myrcene works best in conjunction with other terpenes, cannabinoids and flavonoids rather than by itself. It works to enhance their abilities as they also seem to enhance it.
Myrcene has a sedative effect that is relatively strong, making an excellent aid for a good night’s sleep and as a muscle relaxant that can give relief from cramps associated with certain muscular diseases.
As with all the terpenes, there is a great deal more to study and learn. Science is only scraping at about 1% of the iceberg right now and there is no doubt that we will unlock more and more therapeutic ways of using cannabis and all of the gifts in its possession.
Which cannabis strains contain myrcene?
Special Kush 1, Skunk XL, and White Widow
These three strains of marijuana that have the highest known levels of Myrcene. Special Kush 1 is a high bred strain, known for extreme sedative effects and pain relief properties.
Skunk XL is a Sativa/Indica cross that is revered for its head high effect but also for being sweet and aromatic in the delivery. Skunk XL is preferred for those who need deep relaxation and stress relief because of the psychoactive high effect that it gives.
White Widow is also a hybrid cross of Indica and Sativa strains that has a powerful euphoric, if not hallucinogenic, quality. It smells like a forest and dirt. This very earthy smelling strain has a very high concentration of Myrcene, which is likely part of the reason for the aroma.
